The Ten Things That Surprised Me Most About Breastfeeding

1. That my husband would come to know what nipple butter is, and where to find it in a store.
2. That I’d become so good at multitasking while I breastfeed. (I can simultaneously answer emails, eat a sandwich and entertain a toddler all while the baby is chowing down!)
3. That depending on how the baby latches on, my breasts can either feel so much relief, or so much pain – all from the teeny, tiny mouth of a newborn.
4. That I now worry about running out of nursing pads more than running out of toilet paper.
5. That at the first session of my breastfeeding support group I’d see more breasts than I’ve ever seen in my entire life.
6. That I’d come to love my comfortable breastfeeding bras so much, and start to dread the day when I have to return to bras with an underwire.
7. That breastfeeding is the only thing having to do with the baby that really doesn’t require any cleaning up afterwards.
8. That I’d finally become skilled in getting my baby to latch without having to hold my own breast in one hand or use a nursing pillow.
9. That I would cry over spilled milk. (nothing worse than pumping and accidentally dumping!)
10. That I’d actually enjoy some of the quiet, sleepy, middle-of-the-night feedings when the rest of the world is asleep.
